Hi Parikshit,
I am impressed what you have questioned. They are all very well valid indeed. But First thing, Do you believe Ramayana, Mahabharata happened ever ? As that’s the vary basis of this argument. And do you think Rama, Ravana, Krishna do not exist today ?
Now my 2 cents, as per Ashtavakra Geeta, no one gets killed and no one gets born. It’s the spirit which is ever existing it just expresses itself.
And even I am Bhramin and I do believe in God, I never have proof of stories of Ramayana and Mahabharata and I am as skeptical as you are. But I believe in “Suddho hum, Buddho hum, Chidanand rupo Shivoham Shivoham !!!”
And sometimes, I think I am not that that knowledgeable to understand the meaning behind all such incidents.
Like, I was also thinking about that elephant which was killed ( or we believe was killed ) for Ganesha but while watch “Mahadev” TV serial I came across another aspect that Nandi asked elephant to give his “head” for Shree Ganesha ! And that elephant did it willingly. Not sure but if God asks me to give my head for his son not sure but it’s so tempting that I might not let that moment let go, as I will be more popular than any other actor/actress/model as I will be worshiped and my face/photo will be hanging in all houses of hindus. 🙂
I dont know which part of story is true, as I was raised with a same story in which Shiva shoots his Trishul to get the head of anyone meets it first. But it’s another way to look at it. There are no proof of such stories and hence we should not analyze it much in detail on own. Rather should think deep or go to some knowledgeable Guru who can explain. Questions are very much important and our life’s true meaning lies in finding answers to those questions.
If you get chance, I recomment read commentry on Ashtavakra Geeta ! It’s very profound. If you wish I can gift it to you as well.
Also, if you get chance, please watch “Upanishad Ganga” on DD. I know it’s not fashionable to watch DD now a days. ( Not sure if you even know but it was ritual for me to wake up with “Rangoli” on every Sunday morning ! ).
Again, I am really impressed the way you have raised so many questions, It means Hinduism is not only in temples but in minds and I am proud of people like you much more then people like Babu bajarangi and Pravin Togadia.
I am so much happy that Hinduism allows someone to questions his own religion so profoundly. And beauty is answers are ready, just efforts needed are to find them.
One more thing, Adi Shankaracharya and Swami Vivekanand also had some questions which you have on similar lines. And they took Hinduism/Spirituality to the world with good knowledge. Read them as well if you get chance.
It’s my heartiest appeal to you to read Ashtavakra Geeta, Kena Upanishad rather just confining yourself to Ramayana, Mahabharata etc. They are great stories but to understand the meaning of each action / incident which happened I guess we all ( including me ! ) need fundamentals right.
Once again, I am impressed that at 19 you are thinking so much deep. I am proud to be Hindu born in same country. And thankful to Internet which helped me to read your blog and let me to know you. I am assured that, “You are Vivekanand in making !” Need is, you just don’t give up.
Would keep reading your blogs !
Tamaso maa jyotir-gamaya !
Hardik
This is a big compliment. But Swami Vivekanand is too great.
But I want to ask one question, from where I can get the original Ashtawakra Gita? I search hard and many results are coming. as you’ve read that, can you please provide me the bool details.
Hi Parikshit, You need to be a seeker first. And you need to ask questions and they will be answered. So never feel that questioning your own religion / tradition is wrong. But just by asking question and not getting answers from someone does not mean that that religion/tradition is wrong. And you need to understand the real meaning behind it.
Now, I am not sure what type of Bhramana you are meeting those who can not answer but first you should know who is true bhramana – the one who knows the “Bhram”. And let me tell you there are very rare such in India. Not by mere getting born to a family and having “Janoi” one becomes bhramana.
About Ashtavakra in it’s pure form visit one of these links.
Click to access Ashtavakra-Gita.pdf
Click to access 1_ashtavakra_gita.pdf
But, it’s mere translation of the shlokas into english. Rather I would suggest you to read an interpretation by some Guru and there are many.
I personally have read/heard commentary on AVG from Sri Sri Ravishankar. But you not necessarily read that one. It’s up to you.
Google on this “commentary on ashtavakra gita” and you would find many options. By Sri Sri ravishankar, by Osho, by Chinmaya Mission etc.
It’s upto you which one you would like. You might find 1/2 chapters online as well So read them and then decide which one to purchase. Dont go by prices. 🙂
Important thing, our religion is not that of extremist one and we should not encourage that too. So, there is no wrong doing in questioning anything. But dont stay with questions, ask them to right person and get them answered. Sometime it might take time but persist them.
Anyway, good luck on your mission.
Parikshit, all religious texts are written in context of the time and the characters are to be seen in light of the time in which these books were written. While many people blindly follow the values and actions from these books, it is wrong to just blindly follow. Even books that are considered to be age old religious books were contradicted by later thinkers and/or reinterpreted to suit the needs of the time. Example: Upanishads are the criticism/reinterpretation of the vedas. Even some Upanishads are criticism or contradictions of other Upanishads.
The key thing is that all these books are some form of history – may not always be accurate but there are things to think about. As you are rightly doing it, you are evaluating the actions of the main characters of these books. That is the right thing to do. Learn but do not follow without using your own thinking. Religion today has become more about rituals, traditions etc and does not help people think about how to live with others. It focuses more on pleasing some form of God but not on how to best live with others and make both your life and the life of people around you better together.
I asked many religion leaders including Brahman, Swadhyay Kendras, etc. but everyone has one answer “We should not question god, he’ll punish you”. Once when I got less marks in exam they suggest me that I should stop my anti-god thinking. they really make us “God Fearing People”.
This is utter rubbish. God never punish for asking questions ! He has lot more work to do then keeping track of each one asking questions. 🙂
Fact is all our great dialogues with god are in form of question and answer. And Swadhyaya kendra should not do that definitely as they preach on Bhagavad Gita and Bhagavad gita started with Arjun’s question to Lord Krishna. So, dont feel guilty of asking question. Rather ask it to right person and you will get correct answers.
And as Samir has mentioned, read with applying your mind. Dont just blindly follow. And that’s the beauty of Hinduism that we are suppose to and permitted to question our believes/traditions. So you are not doing anything wrong.
Yeah, if you got less marks believe me it’s you who needs to work on your studies and nothing to do with God for sure. As in western countries people dont believe in god rather at 16 they would have done all drinks/sex/drugs etc in life still they do succeed in life/academics. So it has nothing to do with that.
If all highly educated people are good then all IASs and IIMs or Doctors/Engineers should have been ethical and good people. But sometime big scams are done by them only. So, it’s just utter rubbish.
God bless you !
